How to Stop Numbing Out and Start Listening to Your Body

There’s Something Beneath the Noise

It’s time to drop in and listen to what stirs underneath the noise.

This is something I have been thinking about a lot lately.

Even as a somatic practitioner, someone who loves yoga and mindfulness, I am still living in a world that is constantly pulling for my attention. And if I am being honest, sometimes it feels easier to grab my phone and numb out than to sit with myself.

You might feel this too.

Reaching for your phone to scroll.
Putting on music the moment things get quiet.
Turning on the TV during meals.

These habits can feel harmless, even comforting. But over time, they become a way of avoiding the space within.

Why Silence Can Feel So Uncomfortable

When there is no distraction, something interesting happens.

There can be a sense of discomfort.
An internal restlessness.
Almost like an awkward silence inside yourself.

This is not because something is wrong.

It is because your system is not used to being with itself.

When we are constantly filling space, we are not giving the body or mind room to process, feel, or integrate.

And underneath all that noise, there is actually something waiting for you.

There is wisdom.
There is clarity.
There is life.

The Habit of Numbing Out

Distraction is not random. It is patterned.

Your brain is wired to seek quick rewards, especially in a world filled with constant stimulation. Social media, notifications, and fast content all activate the brain’s reward system.

The dopamine plays a key role in this. It reinforces behaviors that feel immediately rewarding, even if they do not support you long term.

Here is a helpful breakdown of how this works: Dopamine: the pathway to pleasure

Because of this, sitting in stillness for even five minutes can feel harder than reaching for your phone.

Not because stillness is wrong.
But because it is unfamiliar.

Building the Capacity to Be With Yourself

This is the work.

Not removing all distractions from your life.
Not forcing yourself into silence all the time.

But slowly building the capacity to be with yourself.

To sit with your:

thoughts
feelings
sensations

To stay present instead of immediately reaching for something outside of you.

This is what creates resilience in your nervous system.

The ability to stay with internal experience is closely tied to emotional regulation and well-being: You Can Investigate Your Emotions Without Suppressing Them

The more you practice presence, the more natural it becomes.

What Happens When You Create Space

When you stop filling every moment, something begins to shift.

Your mind becomes more spacious.
Your body begins to feel more grounded.
Your creativity starts to move again.

You begin to hear your own voice more clearly.

This is where your authentic self lives.

Not in the noise.
Not in the scroll.
But in the quiet awareness underneath it all.

Simple Ways to Start

You do not need to overhaul your life to begin.

Start small.

• Take a walk without music
• Sit for a few minutes without your phone
• Eat one meal in silence
• Practice slow, intentional breathing

If you want a guided place to begin, this is a powerful practice:

Each time you choose presence, you are rewiring your system.

Each time you stay instead of distract, you are building trust with yourself.

Coming Back to Yourself

I know this can feel challenging.

We are not meant to live in complete silence or remove all forms of enjoyment and stimulation.

But we are meant to have the capacity to be with ourselves.

To listen.
To feel.
To exist without constantly needing to escape.

And when you begin to do this, even in small ways, everything changes.

You find yourself underneath the noise.

An Invitation

If this is something you are wanting to explore more deeply, you do not have to do it alone.

Somatic work creates a space where you can safely reconnect with your body, build this capacity, and learn how to stay present with yourself in a supported way.
